Prostin Vr 500Mcg/1Ml 5Ampx1Ml is a medication that helps keep the ductus arteriosus open in newborn infants before undergoing surgical procedures to correct congenital heart defects.

Composition of Prostin VR

Prostin VR contains the active ingredient Alprostadil, a synthetic version of prostaglandins naturally found in the body. It works by relaxing the smooth muscles of blood vessels, thereby improving blood flow.

Prostin injection uses

Prostin VR is administered to newborn infants by intravenous injection or intra-arterial catheter when the baby has certain heart defects that require the ductus arteriosus to remain open until surgical correction can be performed.

Once the surgery is completed, there is no longer a need for the ductus arteriosus to remain open (as it normally closes after birth once the baby begins to breathe independently).

Prostin dose in neonates

The medication should be used only under the supervision and guidance of a physician.

Prostin VR side effects

Prostin VR may cause some side effects, such as:

• apnoea (cessation of breathing)

• Temporary fever

• Convulsions

• Bradycardia (slow heart rate)

• Hypotension (low blood pressure)

• Tachycardia (increased heart rate)

• Diarrhea

• Hypokalemia (low blood potassium levels)

Contraindications

Prostin VR should not be used in patients with known hypersensitivity to any of its components.

Warnings and Precautions

Caution should be exercised before using Prostin VR, especially in the following cases:

• Babies with a tendency to bleed easily.

• Obstruction of blood flow to the lungs.

• Infants experiencing apnoea or bradycardia; treatment should be discontinued, and appropriate medical care provided. This occurs more frequently in infants weighing less than 2 kg at birth.

• Feeding difficulties, as the medication may cause thickening of the stomach wall, making it harder for the stomach to empty.

• Prolonged use may weaken the wall of the ductus arteriosus and the pulmonary artery.

• The medication may cause long-bone abnormalities, so the doctor will monitor symptoms and decide whether to continue treatment.

• It should not be used in cases of severe respiratory distress syndrome (RDS) until the diagnosis is confirmed by a physician.

Drug Interactions

Caution is advised when Prostin VR is used in combination with other medications, particularly:

• Cardiotonic agents such as Digoxin.

• Vasopressors such as Dopamine or Isoproterenol.

• Diuretics such as Furosemide.

• Antibiotics such as Penicillin.

Storage Instructions

• Keep out of the reach of children.

• Store in a refrigerator at 2–8°C.

• The diluted solution should be used within 24 hours.

• Do not use the medication after the expiry date.
